The Elderly Alone No Longer. Now They Have C-3PO

Toyota is known for cars now but in 1926, it was known for its robots and the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, which produced automatic fabric looms that could detect problems and shut down automatically. It sounds a little Skynet and Bicentennial Man because it involves “autonomation”, which is automation with human intelligence.

This is something they are looking to use again as Japan has an ever-increasing health care crisis and aging populous and are also dealing with a lack of nurses so it is not a surprise that the robots could be ready as soon as next year with ‘their descendants working on the moon as soon as 2020’.

Safety regulations for service robots, including nursing droids are already being drawn up by the government.  There has even been a code of ethics for ‘how robots should treat humans and, perhaps ironically, how humans should treat robots’ by the South Korean Government. To ensure that the machines will be safe, new company Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, has launched a five-year project to better safety standards for the droids.

Very cool.It was about time too. All the movies from the last two decades were screaming for this to happen, four decades if you include Star Wars.

The plan is said to save Japan 2.1 trillion yen (about $21 billion) if these robots do care for the elderly.

Are you excited? Hey! Will they even talk?

China Attempted To Hack Google Through McAfee?!!

This is a surprise. Well, not really a surprise but apparently, the hackers rumoured to have been Chinese officials exploited a flaw in Microsoft Explorer’s McAfee to access to Google. This previously unknown flaw was reported by McAfee who said ‘criminals who engineered the attacks persuaded employees of the companies to click on a link to a website that secretly downloaded sophisticated malicious software onto their PCs.’

Dmitri Alperovitch, a vice president of research with McAfee admitted, “We have never seen attacks of this sophistication in the commercial space. We have previously only seen them in the government space.”

He continued, ”The programs allowed the hackers to take control of the PCs without the knowledge of their users”.

Microsoft hasn’t yet fixed the error but hopefully they are soon on their way to doing so. As we reported yesterday, McAfee has recently signed with Facebook to provide $7.5 billion worth of computer anti-virus software as their official virus protectors for a year.

If you are wondering about whether the security of your computer is safe in your computer software’s hands, be not alarmed. Computer technicians we spoke with remarked that there are a number of good anti-virus and anti-spyware programs but NOTHING guarantees your computer safety because of new viruses are constantly becoming more creative and sophisticated as was the attack that originated from China, as the years go by.

Try not to click on anything suspicious though.

China Mourns Google

Though Google has not yet made good with their ultimatum, the sadness of China’s Internet users is apparent in the large illegal showing of sadness and dedication in the form of lit candles and flowers, sometimes with notes, one that read “Google – a real man” strewn around the Google sign at its’ Beijing headquarters at the Tsinghua Science Park.

Why is it illegal? Because signs of dissent in China are not tolerated and science park security have decreed it the act as the ‘illegal flower donation”, much to the dismay of citizens who sent Twitter in a flurry (even though Twitter is blocked by China) with messages like ‘illegal’ and ‘flower donation’ together in one phrase, we live in an era of truly distorted values”.

Distorted is one way of putting it.

Barbie Is The Venus de Milo, Statue Of Liberty AND COCO!

Barbie really does get around. Now, she delves into the art world assuming famous artwork and subjects as Coco Chanel, Venus de Milo, Girl With The Pearl Earring painting, Nefertiti and . She even gets onto the 1950s cover of Vogue shot by Erwin Blumenfeld.

We really like it but where are the ethnic sisters or the Asians or Caramel persuasion?

Google To Pull Out Of China?

Our favourite Internet search provider of all is now thinking of withdrawing out of China due to highly sophisticated computer attacks targeting their Google mail in mid-December. David Drummond, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer for Google says that someone was attempting to steal intellectual property from Google and other large corporations. It also appeared that the targets of the Gmail attacks were Chinese human rights activists.

As part of ”[Google’s] investigation, [they] have discovered that the accounts of dozens of U.S.-, China- and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties.”

Uh oh.

Bad Bad Chinese computer geniuses!

Drummond continues, ”We launched in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that “we will carefully monitor conditions in China, including new laws and other restrictions on our services. If we determine that we are unable to achieve the objectives outlined we will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to China.”

These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered–combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web–have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down, and potentially our offices in China.”

Reminds you of Brad Pitt and his being banned from China for playing in Seven Years In Tibet, doesn’t it? We do not think China will look favourably upon free speech and if whoever it is, is targeting human rights activists, the activists could be in more danger than ever.

We hope rather than know that basic freedom speech will be accessed in China someday but we think Google execs are doing a good job at making it clear what they want to enforce.

Drink Your Path To Beauty

A slew of new drinkable products are popping up everywhere for the sake of beauty. According to Mintel, a market research firm “global food and drink product launches with a ‘beauty enhancing’ claim increased by a staggering 306 percent from 2005 to 2008,” in Europe and the United States while the Kline Group, another firm believe that the industry to grow from the $1.7 billion in 2007 to $2.2 billion by 2013.

The idea is so popular that in the restaurant Imperial Herbal in Singapore, restaurant-goers with dermatology problems speak with an herbalist, who creates ‘treatments’ that are to be added to their meals. In Japan, collagen, a protein found in connective tissues is added to yogurt drinks, dried fruits and other foods with the idea that consuming it will improve one’s skin. Nescafé has followed suit, hopping onto the collagen train while GliSODin Skin Nutrients is one of the new products in the US with cantaloupe extract high in superoxide dismutase (an antioxidant enzyme).

Dermatologist Francesca Fusco seems to agree that edible beauty products are good but added that “you can also get all of the benefits of this through a healthy diet and a good multivitamin.”

Collagen in food though has ‘‘nothing unique […] that makes it specifically useful for connective tissues’’, a cosmetic chemist at Pharmasol Corporation James Hammer said.

Healthy diet and good multivitamin or Beauty product for dinner?

Turmeric Contains Highest Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Cancer Qualities

What is turmeric? Well, in its’ simplest use it is a yellow-coloured spice from India used in curry dishes. It also contains an active ingredient called curcumin, which not only gives curry food its’ golden colour but provides turmeric with curcuminoids, which contain antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. This attributes to the lack of colon cancer sufferers in India because of their avid consumption of curry food which contains turmeric. Consuming turmeric also helps keep your immune system in check.

“The benefits of turmeric have always been a part of Chinese herbal medicine as well as Ayurvedic medicine of India. This natural food is believed to support liver health, help prevent bad cholesterol, and it is being studied for its ability to block tumors.”

Turmeric extracts also promote “healthy skin care, healthy cholesterol levels, liver and gallbladder health and possible joint pain relief through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.”

The medical professional we spoke with concurred adding that ‘most of what is found today in terms of medicinal tablets and cures used to be derived from herbs and plants and nowadays people forget that herbs still an effective and pure way of fighting disease’.

There are many spices with health properties such as cinnamon, fennugreek (methi) and bitter melon which lower blood sugar; fennugreek being recommended for mothers to increase breast milk production. Garlic also strengthens the immune system and also lowers cholesterol.

Recent studies have also shown that taking ginger capsules of 250 mg 4x a day are the equivalent of taking Ibuprofen 4x a day.

And how would you use this spice to cure you from your cold or flu? Put a little less than one tablespoon of turmeric doused with honey. Eat it in its’ entirety with a glass of warmish water or your tongue will be yellow and you will have a slightly unpleasant aftertaste in your mouth. If you are feeling adventurous, which we don’t recommend you may have it without honey. If you would like to use it in another way, eat some curry.

Where would you find this spice? In most health food stores or perhaps at your local grocery store.

Don’t wait until you are sick to use turmeric or any of these other spices. Building a strong immunity system is key to maintaining one.

A much better alternative than Buckley’s, don’t you think?

See Santa’s Travels With NORAD!

If you wanted to track the location of Father Christmas tonight, you have only to look on NORAD’s site, accessible in 7 languages.

The tradition started in 1955 when NORAD was called the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) and a Sears advertisement printed Santa’s hotline into CONAD’s instead of Santa!

Colonel Harry Shoup, a commander, decided to have his staff find out where Santa was to so they could pass along the information to the kids.

Nowadays, volunteers help the center by taking phone calls and e-mails from kids. But if you really want to know what’s going on with Santa, all you need is a computer. Thanks to the Internet now, you can track him yourself online through NORAD’s site.

NORAD is made possible by Google Earth so have fun tracking and Merry Christmas!
